Jailbreaking the Baofeng MP31 for GMRS and Ham Radio Use
The Baofeng MP31 is not a good radio. But at $12.50, it doesn’t have to be. The real irritation isn’t the wheezy 2 watts — it’s the locked-down programming and CPS software that feels like it was coded during a mild grudge.
But here’s the part that makes it interesting: it’s not actually as locked as Baofeng wants you to think. With a little creative persuasion, this cheap little GMRS toy can be opened up and pressed into service for both GMRS and 70cm amateur radio. Suddenly, the disposable bargain radio starts looking a lot more mischievous.
