DIY Lightsphere – A Good, Cheap Gary Fong Alternative

Posted on November 20, 2011      by Allen Mowery

Get great results from your photography while saving a ton with this great little do-it-yourself alternative to the Gary Fong Lightsphere!

While I would love to claim the original concept for this little project, I must give credit to Artur Gajewski and his wonderful how-to over at Instructables.

Tried this yourself? I would love to see your results and may even share them on the blog!

Very nice! I will try it instantly with the stuff you get at Ikea.

Thanks for sharing! I love the variety of products you tested, especially the plastic bag ;-)

Do you think one would be able to do this with a “standard” point and shoot? I have a Canon S95.

You should add this to your 15 things for under $25 article (although I suppose you will have to change the title a little…)

What a great simple design, Do you have a comparison (or know of one) with an actual Gary Fong diffuser? Just to see how it really stacks up (the light looks great, just for information obviously).

tom

This is what I use for a $1 diffuser:Go to a Chinese restaurant, buy soup for take-out, drink the soup, clean container, cut a hole in the bottom with a razor, and you got yourself a perfect Lightsphere imitation diffuser.
