A cornerstone of the rural community is the volunteer firefighter -- always ready, always willing to pull together when the call arrives. As a former EMS professional (both paid and volunteer), and someone who has had to call on our local department in the past, I have a greater appreciation for the sacrifice and dedication of our local heroes.
